Hammond, NY-Rev. Burtt E. Sweet, 85, of Sheephead Point, Hammond, NY, passed away at his home late Christmas morning surrounded by his loving family.
Burtt was born On March 8, 1926, in Scranton, PA, the son of Rev. George L. and Ethel S. Walton Sweet. He graduated from Camptown High School in Camptown, PA and then entered the United States Navy in 1944. He attended Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, PA, graduating in 1946. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950 from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA and finally earned his Master of Divinity degree from Drew University, Madison, NJ in 1955.
Rev. Sweet married Marilyn F. Moore on June 9, 1955 at the Drew University Theological Chapel with Rev. Dr. Fred G. Holloway officiating.
Rev. Sweet served at 16 churches during his career, moving to Sheephead Point after his retirement. The churches include: Pine Street Methodist Church, Williamsport, PA; Wallis Run Charge Methodist Church, Wallis Run Charge, PA; Rome Methodist, North Orwell Union & Orwell Federated, where he served as Pastor Emeritus, Rome PA; Narrowsburg, NY and Mylanville, PA Methodist Churches; Newark Valley Methodist Church, Newark Valley, NY; Tabernacle Methodist Church, where he served as Associate Pastor, Binghamton, NY; Vestal Center Methodist Church, Vestal, NY; Clark Summit United Methodist, Clark Summit, PA; Boulevard United Methodist Church, Binghamton, NY; Oneonta District Methodist Churches, where he served as the district superintendant for six years, Oneonta, NY; Shavertown United Methodist Church, Shavertown, PA; Fairview United Methodist Church, serving for 6 years, Binghamton, NY; and Castle Creek & Glen Castle United Methodist Church, where he retired, Castle Creek and Glen Castle, NY.
Burtt was an avid fisherman, boater and trumpet player.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his sons, Burtt E. II, Liverpool, NY and Daniel G. & his wife, Lynne, Williamstown, NY; his daughters and their husbands, Rev. Deborah & Jon Earthrowl, Salem, NY and Rev. Rebekah Sweet & Birney Kellogg, Gouverneur, NY; his brothers George R. Sweet, Johnson Cilty, NY and Walter D., Walton, KY; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and his beloved feline, Zandi. He is predeceased by a sister, Ethel S. Russell, and a brother, Harold, who died as an infant.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 1st at 12 noon at the Reformed Church of the Thousand Isles. In addition, a service of Remembrance will be held in the summer of 2012 at the family home at Sheephead Point, with a date to be determined.
