Salem, NY- J. Elwood Shaler, 87, of Salem, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, July 16, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born November 6, 1924 in Jackson, NY he is the son of the late John Elwood and Mabel (Hyatt) Shaler. Elwood was a 1942 graduate of Salem Washington Academy and was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Beppu, Japan where he was a Motor Pool Sgt. as part of Headquarters Department 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry.
Elwood operated the family farm in Jackson from 1947 until 1956 at which time he started a logging and pulping company until 1960 when he and his wife Betty established Shaler Trucking Co. in Salem which he operated until retiring in 2006.
Elwood was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Salem. He was a member of the Antique Tractor Pulling Association; a member of the Tri-State Tractor Pulling Association; a member of the Francis J. Clark, CMH Post 812 American Legion in Salem and a member of the New York State Truckers Association.
Elwood enjoyed Antique Tractor pulling and was awarded hundreds and hundreds of trophies over the years. He enjoyed mechanic work, cutting wood, NASCAR Racing; Stock Show Rodeos and enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Clark Shaler; a son, Andrew Clark Shaler; sisters, Frances Cantwell and Irene Paterson.
He is survived by his children, Joanne Shaler Larmon and her husband William Milton Larmon of Daytona Beach, FL and John "Jack" Elwood Shaler and his wife Cherry Dunbar Shaler of Littleton, CO; a daughter-in-law, Regina Chittendon Shaler of Shaftsbury, VT; a sister; Doris Shaler Allen of Salinas, CA; grandchildren; Andrea Leah Larmon and her husband Kenneth Konopka of Lee, MA, Brett William Larmon and his wife Leah Arnold of Lenox, MA, Davina Ann Perret and her husband Rev. Kyle of Eugene, OR, John Elwood Shaler, IV and his wife Angie of Millikin, CO, Courtney Shaler Smith and her husband Robert of Queensbury, Houston James Shaler of Shaftsbury, VT and Noble William Shaler of Shaftsbury, VT; great grandchildren, Jack Oliver Tallboy of Lee, MA, Alexa Imogen Tallboy of Lee, MA, Lela Anne Smith of Queensbury, NY, Shaler Arnold Larmon of Lenox, MA, Jeffrey William Larmon of Lenox, MA, John Thomas (JT) Perret of Columbus, GA, Camille Elizabeth Perret of Eugene, OR; John Elwood "Jay" Shaler, V of Millikin, CO and Andrew James Shaler of Millikin, CO. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 pm Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Salem, 13 West Broadway, Salem. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm following the calling hours at the church. Rev. Donna Jackson, Pastor will officiate.
Interment with military honors will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Salem.
